Ken Braithwaite is the author of the rip-roaring 1820s Drover adventures featuring his rugged hero Jack Rutherford.

Ken is a retired accountant, keen fisherman, dedicated member of the Rotary Club and chair of the Robinson House Writers Stokesley branch.

Ken Braithwaite’s Jack Rutherford ‘Wild Drover’ series offers readers a captivating glimpse into the gritty, often perilous world of 19th-century cattle droving. The series centres around Jack Rutherford, whose adventures unfold against the backdrop of the historic drove roads that crisscrossed the UK, particularly in North Yorkshire, where Braithwaite himself grew up.

After retiring from a long career in the insurance industry in 2001, Ken Braithwaite turned his attention to writing, bringing his passion for history and storytelling to life. His debut novel, The Wild Drover, was inspired by the rich history of the drove routes and the men who risked their lives to drive cattle across rugged terrain to markets and fairs. This first book introduced Jack Rutherford, a rugged and resilient protagonist, and set the stage for two sequels: The Wild Drover’s Revenge and The Wild Drover in Danger.

Ken continues to immerse himself in the history of droving, spending time researching and traveling the UK to uncover more about the routes, people, and challenges of this often-overlooked chapter of history. His work has not only provided readers with thrilling adventures, but also a deep connection to the past, preserving the legacy of the drovers and their hard-fought journey across the land.
