Mick Hutchinson
I was born in Hartlepool, and raised in its neighbouring town of Billingham, and although I will always remain a North East lad at heart, for the last forty years or so, I have been domiciled at the southern end of the A19 in the beautiful old city of York. I spent my working life involved in the related areas of Sports Development, Community Recreation and Leisure Management, including teaching and lecturing in those areas at Universities in York and Leeds. I retired in the spring of 2020, threatening never to darken the doors of ‘working life’ ever again: So far, so good.
I always enjoyed writing and scribbling as a pastime, although I was usually too busy to take this part-time hobby any further. That was until the early 2010s, when I started on what would turn out to be my first serious writing project, That Sounds Like Stevie! It involved telling the stories behind the ‘additional’ studio recordings of Stevie Wonder – close to four hundred songs in all. That book was published in May 2019.
Having chronicled Stevie’s life and collected his music for close on fifty years, and, buoyed on by early sales success with That Sounds Like Stevie! I have now completed my second Stevie writing project Have Eyes To Wonder – Stevie’s Early Years. This book, published in March 2025 shines an informed light on the early life and recording career of ‘Little’ Stevie Wonder, with the sounds of Motown, Detroit, and the challenging social events of the 1960s a constant backdrop to the developing tale. This account takes events up to early 1971 with Stevie shortly to turn twenty-one. There is of course another overdue story here, waiting for me to tell.
